While Mahler claims to have composed the second movement of his Night Song symphony after catching a glimpse of a patrol in "fantastic chiaroscuro", Wagner's opera Tristan and Isolde was inspired not only by the eponymous myth, but also by his love for the poet Mathilde Wesendonck. As for John Williams, he drew inspiration from Wagner's operas and his leitmotiv technique to create musical themes for each of the characters!
